Finally – after months of anticipation – the new green away kit has been revealed by the DFB. Sporting the DFB Adler in black on a white disc surmounted by three championship stars in subtle green thread, the new incarnation of the classic Lindengrün (“lime green”) Trikot is sure to be a top seller among fans of the Nationalmannschaft.
Sported here by skipper Philipp Lahm, the shirt has a number of retro features that nod to previous designs. As well as the round neck that evokes the spirit of Beckenbauer’s great European Championship-winning side of 1972 (and the famous quarter-final first leg against England at Wembley), it also contains the very subtle horizontal two-tone detailing that featured on the shirt worn by the team in the early 1980s.
The simply yet stylish design carries the traditional and immediately recognisable Adidas three stripes on the shoulders and arms, the Adidas logo in white and on the inside of the neck a legend evoking the spirit of 1972. The new Trikot is teamed with traditional-looking white shorts with green trim, and green socks.
Following the debut of the new Schwarz und Weiß 2011-2013 design last year against Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine in Kyiv, the team will be kitted out in the new green and white ensemble at the end of this month at Bremen’s Weserstadion – where Joachim Löw’s side taken on two-time European Champions France.
I really did like the black with threads of gold and red design sported at South Africa 2010, but nothing will ever beat the Lindengrün… All that remains is for the team to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors of forty years ago and bring back the Henri Delaunay trophy from Kyiv!
